Why Exchanging Reciprocal Links Just For Rankings Doesn't Work

Following the "Linking For Rankings Method" let's say you exchange 10,000 links over 3 years. Firstly, the chances are, the other sites you link with are hiding their link section, so it is highly unlikely an actual person will click that link and visit your site.
Will those 10,000 links get you on the first page of Google?? NO, there is much more to search engine optimization than that. Links are a tiny part of the equation.
So you have no free traffic from your hidden links, and you are not yet at the top of the search engine, how do you get your visitors? In short, you buy them. Negative cash flow coming out of the few sales or memberships you generate.
To attain the type of traffic the SEO gurus are promoting to you, you need a first page listing on a major search engine, to get real traffic you need to be in the top 3. On that page there are 10 spaces. Just to prove the following odds to yourself, open another window now. Go to Google, or any other search engine, and do a search on a keyword or phrase that may be used to find your site.
Find the part of the page that tells you how many results have been found. Now divide that number by 10 and put it in place of these question marks below

Those are the odds of you getting on that first page. Would you invest your time or money with a non-internet advertising company who gave those odds of decent exposure for your business? If you are linking just for rankings, and hiding your links page, that is EXACTLY what you are doing.
Let's assume for a moment, after exchanging a LOT of hidden links, that bring very few visitors, and playing the optimization games of the SEO world, you are one of the lucky ones that hit that first page. What happens when that search engine changes the way it decides the order of the results? Do they do that? You bet they do! Google is now updating how they order their results (changing their algorithms) at least once a month, a practice known as "The Google Dance Syndrome".
The sites that have optimized themselves to the first page suddenly find themselves not on the first page, but on the fifth or sixth page of the search results, or worse, they are not even in the top 100. A lot of wasted hard work. Now they have to start all over again with new advice from the Gurus, who let's face it, are only delivering educated guesses on how Google or Yahoo are doing things. We know for a fact
that Google does not tell them how they order their results. NO search engine will promise that you can keep that top spot, even if you get it. What if they do another update when you are at the top? What use are your 10,000 hidden links now?
This may shock you, one site we own, for a period of about 6 weeks had you searched Google for the term "Free Dating" came in at number 7 or 8 on the first page of results. How did we get it there? Not with links, it had only 165 reciprocal links at the time, we got it there by tweaking keywords and constantly messing with the coding and optimization of the pages, we were following the advice of the "Gurus". Time we could have been spending finding quality link partners and servicing our clients.
Well, we learned our lesson a few weeks later.... with no changes from us, that site was back on page 5 of the results. It simply is not worth the time investment. It is very true search engines consider links as PART of the way they order results, but it is not the only consideration. If anyone can find a search engine that promises having 20,000 links will give you a top search engine placement, please let us know. However, 20,000 well placed and visible links will CERTAINLY bring you regular traffic.
Before you listen to the "Link for Rankings" Gurus, or spend all your time concentrating on PR and search engine optimization, understand this. NONE of the major search engines want their results manipulated. They want to deliver accurate search results and ads to surfers period. More and more they are visiting the forums of the Search Engine Optimization experts and counteracting their tricks by changing the search engine algorithms.
Yes, we admit when we were at the top of Google the traffic was excellent, but that optimization took us over a year to achieve. Now that site is not even in the top 100. Has it died? NO!
