Following the "Linking For Rankings Method" let's say you exchange 10,000 links over 3 years. Firstly, the chances are, the other sites you link with are hiding their link section, so you will get very few visitors from them over those three years.
Because you have no free traffic, and you are not yet at the top of the search engine, how do you get your visitors? In short, you buy them. Negative cash flow coming out of the few sales or memberships you generate.
You are aiming for a first page listing on any search engine if you want the flow of traffic the "Gurus" and "Experts" are talking about. On that page there are 10 spaces. Just to prove it to yourself, open another window now. Go to Google, or any other search engine, and do a search on a keyword or phrase that may be used to find your site.
Now find the part of the page that tells you how many results have been found. Now divide that number by 10 and put it in place of these question marks

Would you invest your time or money advertising a non-internet business with an advertising company who gave those odds of decent exposure for your business? If you are linking just for rankings, and hiding your links page, that is EXACTLY what you are doing.
Let's assume for a moment, after exchanging a LOT of hidden links, that bring very few visitors, you are one of the lucky ones that hit that first page. What happens when that search engine changes the way it decides the order of the results? Remember the Florida update on Google? The top sites suddenly found themselves not on the first page, but on the fifth or sixth page of the search results. A lot of wasted hard work. NO search engine will promise
that you can keep that top spot, even if you get it. What if they do another Florida update when you are at the top? What use are your 10,000 hidden links now?
This may shock you, one site we own, for a period of about 6 weeks had you searched Google for the term "Free Dating" came in at number 7 or 8 on the first page of results. How did we get it there? Not with links, it had only 165 reciprocal links at the time, we got it there by tweaking keywords, and constantly messing with the coding and optimization of the pages. Time we could have been spending finding quality link partners and servicing our clients. Well we learned our lesson, a few weeks later, with no changes from us, that site was back on page 3 of the results. It simply is not worth the time investment. It is very true search engines consider links as PART of the way they order results, but it is not the only consideration. If anyone can find a search engine that promises having 20,000 links will give you a top search engine placement
please let us know. However, 20,000 well placed and visible links will CERTAINLY bring you regular traffic.
